Hey guys, this is Sara posting! I have an interesting article in the works, but I wanted to get my first post out of the way. So here’s a quickie:
This video just popped up via one of my art friends, and I thought it was worth sharing. I don’t have feelings about anime one way or the other, but the narrator’s insight applies to a lot of things.
One thing I’ve learned is how important it is to be able to take criticism well. Equally important is having the courage to identify and cut out your crutches. Lastly, you have to put in the time to learn the traditional techniques in order to have the necessary skills to innovate well… but don’t take my word for it. I’ll let you watch the video and decide what you think for yourself!
I think it’s so true how there is a lot of work and time that goes in to learning about fundamentals and the classics of whatever your study. It’s easy to forget the importance of working at the time-honed techniques, especially when you have no interest in reproducing the traditional style and see progress working on your own “thing”. My opinion: good advice. Nice work, narrator.

Ok, not exactly a “How-to”, but I think this is probably the best kind of advice people need to hear over and over again: Work hard, respect what came before you, trust in the process, and success will come.
